Cuban Giants

Often called the "Original Cuban Giants" to distinguish them from the Cuban X-Giants, on an offshoot team, this club started out as a hotel team in Babylon, NY. The players were African-American, the "Cuban" name being a ruse to get around the racial obstacles at the time (though the team actually did train in Cuba). Before the "color line" was universally enforced, a couple of black teams actually played in otherwise-white leagues. The Cuban Giants represented Trenton in the Middle States League in 1889, finishing second with a record of 55-17.
